  • Controversy over so-called limo service
    The driver at the centre of a controversy over a Cork school paying for a 'limousine' service for traveller children has jumped to the defence of the school, insisting the resulting furore to be overblown and without grounding. Martin Cannon, of Cannon Limousines, insisted the issue has arisen over jealously and dispelled any notions of favouritism been given towards the traveller children at Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh, Bishopstown.
  • Cork students picket Education department
    Students from across Cork joined forces yesterday (November 19) to protest against the introduction of third level fees in any form. Hundreds of students from University College Cork and Cork Institute of Technology, lecturers, secondary school students and parents came together to stage a picket outside the offices of the Department of Education on Washington Street yesterday afternoon.
  • Cork teachers take to the streets
    Primary school teachers from across Cork will take to the streets this Saturday (November 22) to voice their opposition to the proposed cuts in education announced in this year's budget. Teachers have voiced serious concern about the cutbacks which will see the pupil teacher ratio increase to 28 to one and will mean that every school will only be able to employ two teachers of English as an additional language, without regard to the numbers of pupils who require the service. Furthermore, from January 2009, there will no longer be any substitute cover for teachers on uncertified sick leave.
  • E5.27 million education centre to open at Mercy
    A state-of-the-art nurse education centre will open at the Mercy University Hospital (MUH) on Monday (November 24). The centre will be used to provide practical training, tutorial, lecture, research and study facilities for MUH staff and other health care professionals. The Ä5.27 million facility has an overall area of 1,337 square metres over three floors and includes lecture rooms with a capacity for 100 people, a library with two reading rooms, tutorial rooms, practical training rooms, equipment rooms, a computer room and offices.
